Yoga on Disc: Reviews of new yoga CDs from our members

Spring 2007

by Tresca Weinstein

Gentle Yoga Randal Willliams with music by Daniel Kobialka
Inspired by the rhythms of the life force in nature, this CD of instruction by Randal, a senior Kripalu teacher, paired with Daniel's transporting musical accompaniment, offers a deeply peaceful experience. From a supported relaxation, "Planted In the Field," we move into 23 minutes of seated postures ("Dancing Roots") gently engaging the lower body. In "A Shoot Rises," Randal brings us slowly to our feet, then leads us through the primary movements of the spine ("Blade of Grass"). His sensitive, detailed instruction comes to a close with an 11-minute relaxation.

Yoga Nidra for Multiple Sclerosis and Yoga Nidra I: Light Particles Inez Stein
Inez, a professional-level Kripalu Yoga teacher and Integrated Yoga Therapist, has been teaching yoga to students with MS for more than five years and trains teachers for the Multiple Sclerosis Society's New England chapter. In Yoga Nidra for Multiple Sclerosis, she narrates a 24-minute yoga nidra specifically for those with MS, including affirmations, breath awareness, and a body scan. Yoga Nidra I: Light Particles is a relaxing and revitalizing half-hour experience for everyone that incorporates healing imagery of light and stars showering over the body. E-mail

Low to the Ground: Gentle S-L-O-W Flow Yoga and Prenatal Yoga Portia Brockway
You don't even have to stand up to experience a full, invigorating yoga experience. Portia's Low to the Ground CD, set to the soothing sound of ocean waves, guides you through a complete posture flow that takes place entirely on the floor, with spine lengtheners, abdominal strengtheners, belly-down poses, and spinal twists. The "grounded" flow ends with a chakra visualization. Portia's prenatal yoga CD includes postures and pranayama for this stage of life, safely preparing the body and breath for opening during labor. The sequence includes seated tension relievers, cat stretch variations, gentle standing postures, squatting and seated hip openers, and side lying poses, as well as a delicious visualization that compares the womb to a ripe, nourishing mango.

Meditations on Self-Love: The Sacred Practice of Loving Ourselves Body, Heart, and Soul; Meditations on Spiritual Loving: Nurturing the Soul in Our Relationships; and The Soul of a Teacher: Answering the Call Vidya Carolyn Dell'uomo
When we know what it is to love ourselves, we can feel deep love for others. Guided with wisdom and with language that is both direct and full of poetry, Vidya's meditation CDs, accompanied by Mark Kelso's tranquil scores, address both aspects of love. Self-Love includes meditations on making peace with ourselves and honoring our bodies; Spiritual Loving offers a meditation on forgiveness and compassion and another on recognizing the divinity in us all, and includes singer/songwriter Linda Worster's poignant recording of "That's All." The Soul of a Teacher contains Vidya's moving and enlightening 2006 KYTA conference keynote on the soul qualities of teaching, with recordings of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Swami Kripalu. Copies of Vidya's CDs are available wholesale to yoga teachers for resale; contact Vidya at
