David Kessler

David Kessler is one of the world’s foremost experts on healing and loss. His experience as a child witnessing a mass shooting while his mother was dying in a hospital helped him begin his journey. David is the author of five best-selling books, including The Needs of the Dying; On Grief and Grieving and Life Lessons, with Elisabeth Kübler-Ross; and Finding Meaning: The Sixth Stage of Grief. He also coauthored You Can Heal Your Heart with Louise Hay. In 2016, David’s younger son died suddenly at age of 21.

The Goal of Healing from Grief

Resources

  • Being Present with Loneliness and Loss During the Holidays

Holidays are about togetherness. When you’ve lost someone special, your world loses its celebratory qualities. Holidays only magnify loss, since the sadness feels sadder and the loneliness goes deeper.

  • Grief, Darkness, Light

In a time when the markers of our days have been upended and tossed aside, we must feel what we feel, giving ourselves permission to be present to what is lost.

  • Healing a Broken Heart

After a breakup, a big part of our work is to trying to figure out how to heal our negative thought patterns.

  • Grief and Healing in the Wake of the Storm

David Kessler knows firsthand what it’s like to lose your home and all the memories it holds. He was 9 years old when Hurricane Camille destroyed his family’s house on the Gulf of Mexico. He remembers sorting through their wet, ruined possessions, looking for something, anything that was salvageable.
