Mindful Mushroom Foraging Forge a Deeper Connection to Nature and Yourself
- Presenter: Micah Mortali
- Presenter: Tertius Bune

CONNECT WITH WONDER
When we forage, we develop a profound connection to the land. We also tap into our primordial instinct as hunter-gatherers. Developing these skills and abilities buried deep in our DNA can empower us deeply in our modern lives.
You are invited to this mindful outdoor retreat, co-guided by Mindful Outdoor Guide and Transformational Coach Tertius Bune and Micah Mortali, author and founding director of the Kripalu School of Mindful Outdoor Leadership. Together, they will lead you into the world of mushroom hunting focusing on autumn’s most majestic varietal—the magnificent maitake or the “hen of the woods”. Come connect to the woods, trees, and mycelium of the Berkshire Mountains as we slow down, get to “mushroom level”, learn how to find the amazing maitake, and discover more about yourself during the process.
Throughout this retreat, we will:
- Dive deep into the connection between maitakes and their ecosystem.
- Unlock the forest with tree identification skills and how to intuitively see habitats.
- Practice mindful foraging through the hills and forests around Kripalu.
- Discover the joy of safely finding your first wild, edible mushroom.
- Enjoy outdoor cooking in your community of fellow foragers.
Return home with a new awareness of the miracle of mycelium, ready to find your own maitakes and share them with friends and family!
NOTE: This program is designed to develop your ability to forage for maitake mushrooms. Foraging for mushrooms is a combination of hard work and serendipity, so finding edible maitake mushrooms may or may not happen. In addition, this is not a vigorous hiking program. We will be slowing down and tuning in to the subtle hints that nature provides us. Most sessions will be outdoors, so please bring appropriate layers, such as a hat, waterproof jacket and pants, sturdy outdoor shoes (hiking boots or muck boots), and a day pack for water, journal, and personal items. Foraging can take place in habitats that are off trail; please be prepared to protect against and check for ticks.
