Dr. Elissa Epel

Dr. Elissa Epel is a best-selling author, professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California San Francisco (USSF), and an international expert on stress, well-being, and optimal aging. At UCSF, Elissa is vice chair of psychology and directs the Aging, Metabolism, and Emotion Center. She studies the environmental, psychological, behavioral, and social factors that affect cellular aging and climate wellness—as well as how self-care practices, such as meditation and positive stress, can promote psychological and physiological thriving.

Elissa is author of The Stress Prescription: 7 Days to More Joy and Ease and coauthor of The Telomere Effect: A Revolutionary Approach to Living Younger, Healthier, Longer. She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, past president of the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research, and past cochair of the Mind & Life Institute Steering Council. She has served as a consultant to NIH, CDC, Facebook, Apple, and other organizations, and her research has been featured in venues such as TEDMED, NBC’s Today Show, CBS Mornings, 60 Minutes, National Public Radio, and The New York Times. In 2022, Clarivate reported her to be among the top 0.1% of researchers globally for publication impact.
