Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo
Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo was born in London in 1943 and went to India when she was 20 in search of a Buddhist master. In 1964, she became one of the first Western women to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist nun. After several years studying with Khamtrul Rinpoche, a High Lama of the Drukpa Kagyu tradition, she was directed to a remote Himalayan valley, where she spent 18 years, first living in a monastery and later in a cave, immersed in intense spirtual practice. The book Cave in the Snow: A Western Woman’s Quest for Enlightenment is the story of her life. Jetsunma is a renowned champion of women’s rights. She is the founder of the Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery in India.
