Ancestral Voice Liberation
Reclaiming song as a birthright
Your Voice Belongs Here
This program is a playful and immersive experience devoted to remembering the voice as an inherited human birthright—one that lives in the body, the breath, and the bones. Rooted in the sean-nós Irish singing tradition, this retreat offers a slow, embodied pathway back to authentic vocal expression through ancient oral transmission, deep listening, and the power of singing together in community.
Sean-nós, meaning “old style,” is an unaccompanied Irish vocal tradition known for its intimacy, ornamentation, and emotional honesty. It is not about performance or polish, but about presence, relationship, and truth. In this lineage, each voice is welcome exactly as it is.
Over the course of two evenings and two full days, you will be guided to release tension, shame, and self-censorship around the voice, and to rediscover the joy of singing as a natural extension of breath and feeling. Through gentle yoga for singers, somatic voice work, ancestral listening practices, and the learning of traditional Irish songs, we will explore how the voice can become a source of freedom, belonging, and remembrance.
This retreat is designed for singers and non-singers alike. No previous experience with Irish music is required—only a willingness to listen, to feel, and to sound. Teaching is done primarily by ear, in keeping with the tradition, and participants are invited to explore both group singing and supported solo expression within a compassionate, non-judgmental container.
Together we will:
- Reconnect voice to body, breath, and nervous system.
- Learn traditional sean-nós songs through oral transmission.
- Explore ornamentation as personal expression rather than technique.
- Sing in community and in relationship with the land.
- Reclaim the voice as a source of truth, resilience, and joy.
This retreat offers a sanctuary for slowing down, listening deeply, and remembering that your voice does not need fixing—it needs space and acceptance. You are not here to become a singer—you are here to remember that you already are one.
NOTE: No prior singing experience needed.
