Understanding the Highly Sensitive Child and Teen

For parents, teachers, and health professionals.

Is your child highly sensitive? Does he or she ask deep questions? Is he or she easily overstimulated (loud noises, scratchy clothing, etc.) or distressed by injustice and the suffering of others? Have you worked with children like this? More than 20 percent of children, both boys and girls, have this normal but somewhat uncommon trait.

This program—based on the book, The Highly Sensitive Child, by keynote speaker, Elaine Aron, psychologist and pioneer in the study of this trait—is the first program ever to focus on caring for and raising highly sensitive children and teens. Candy Crawford and Alane Freund bring their considerable experience as experts in the field.

High sensitivity is an innate trait found in one out of five people. It is not an autism spectrum disorder, nor is it a mental illness, although the highly sensitive can have other problems, and are often misunderstood and misdiagnosed.

This program includes a balance of learning, support, discussion, and rejuvenating self-care. Expect to be empowered, educated, inspired, and renewed as you learn from experts and each other to better recognize, honor, and navigate the unique challenges and gifts that highly sensitive children and teens present.

Recommended reading Elaine Aron, The Highly Sensitive Child.

Note You will be asked to complete temperament assessments for parents and children as well as a brief questionnaire to be filled out before the program; this program is not for children.
