The Wisdom of Slowing Down: An Ayurvedic Approach to Fall

Our seasonal Ayurveda retreats are one of my favorite offerings at Kripalu.

No matter the time of year, it always seems that the opportunity to step away from the busyness of life, or even just the habitual routines of life, is a welcome invitation.

What Happens When We Step Away

The simple act of coming on retreat can begin to create a shift. Waking up and walking down the hall to morning practice. Taking in the mist rising off the lake. Moving through a day where delicious, nourishing meals are waiting for you at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Having nowhere you need to drive, nothing you need to pick up, and nowhere you need to be. Stepping away from screens and schedules and being immersed in the natural beauty of the Kripalu land. That alone can be enough to create a new perspective.

When coming on retreat, there is also an invitation to reflect and connect, not only with yourself, but with the other people sharing the experience. It is such a gift to witness the progression of community within a program. During the first session, people might still be carrying the fullness of their lives and the momentum of planning and travel. There can be a bit of apprehension around sharing and connecting. Then, over the course of several days, I get to witness a gradual unfurling and softening of the group as everyone settles into a slower rhythm, a place of listening, and a place of trust. By the final session, there is often more warmth, ease, and connection among everyone in the room.

Ayurveda as a Practice of Listening

When Ayurveda is woven into the experience of retreat, there is an added dimension of depth and a further invitation to connection.

Ayurveda, which translates as the “knowledge of life,” invites us into deeper awareness, discernment, curiosity, experimentation, and compassion with ourselves. Rather than offering a set of rules to follow, Ayurveda encourages curiosity about individual experience.

What qualities are present in my body, mind, and spirit?

What feels aligned and harmonious?

What is delighting or depleting my senses?

How does my inner experience reflect the world around me?

Ayurveda reminds us that we are not separate from the natural world. What is happening outside of us is also, in many ways, happening within us. The qualities of the seasons, the temperature, light, moisture, movement, and rhythms of nature influences the body, mind, energy, and emotions.

Experiencing Ayurveda, Not Just Learning It

During the Fall Ayurveda Yoga Retreat, this relationship is explored experientially. Each day offers time for mindful movement, breathwork, and meditation to support the season. There is time outside connecting to the land, the elements, and the senses, along with Ayurveda teachings around practices that support nourishment, digestion, and sense care. Through journaling, reflection, space, and silence, there are opportunities to slow down enough to feel and receive what is actually happening within.

There is time to take in new information, and time to simply be in your own experience.

I think this balance is one of the things that makes the retreat so special. Learning happens cognitively, but also experientially. Ayurveda becomes something that is not only studied or understood intellectually, but something to feel, notice, and experiment with in your own life. A teaching about the qualities of the season might become an awareness of how your own energy is shifting. A practice for supporting digestion might become a new way of tending to yourself. Time spent outdoors might offer a reminder of something the mind has forgotten but the body already knows.

The space offered on retreat allows these experiences to unfold without needing to immediately turn them into something else.

Why Fall Is a Natural Time to Reset

Fall is a particularly beautiful time to explore these practices. After the long days of summer, travel, activity, social gatherings, and outward movement, there is a natural shift. The days become shorter. The air becomes cooler and drier. The landscape begins its transition toward stillness. Before the many outward extensions and demands of the holiday season, there is this beautiful window of time to pause and settle.

It can be a time to ask: What do I want to carry forward? What am I ready to release? What would it feel like to move into the next season with a little more intention and a little less momentum?

This is where Ayurveda can become particularly relevant. Rather than resisting the changes that come with the seasons, Ayurveda offers a way to recognize them and respond with greater awareness. It reminds us to listen for what supports balance, nourishment, steadiness, and ease, and to trust that what we need may change as the world around us changes.

An Invitation to Reconnect

Perhaps most importantly, retreat creates space to hear the inner knowing and longing that is already there.

The Fall Ayurveda Yoga Retreat is an opportunity to pause. To move, breathe, learn, rest, spend time in nature, and listen inward. It is an invitation to reconnect with the rhythms of the season and, through them, perhaps reconnect with something within yourself that has been waiting for your attention.
